Beth’s April Top Artists

Another month, another monthly wrapped!

10. Tame Impala

Song of the Month: Yes I’m Changing

The weather is getting warmer, it’s Tame Impala time. As you may have been able to tell from last week’s article, I’ve been reminiscing on my first-year post-grad and my last year in college; ‘Yes I’m Changing’ was probably my most streamed song the month I graduated. So, of course, I had to give it a few listens while I was writing the article. If you’re graduating this year, I couldn’t recommend this song more. It toes the line of nostalgia and growth, moving on to the person you’ll be and looking back on the person you once were.

9. Father John Misty

Song of the Month: Château Lobby #4 (In C for Two Virgins)

I loooveeee a song that tells a story, and this song does just that. And what’s better than a love story? Especially one about the artist and his now wife. It’s not filled with any out-there metaphors, it’s a straight-up, raw, and real love song. It’s simultaneously vulnerable and theatrical, something I think love brings out in many of us.

8. Charli XCX

Song of the Month: party 4 u

Yes, TikTok got my ass with this one, I am in fact, no better than anyone else. With all the brat live content and endless party 4 u takes on my feed, how could I not indulge in a little how i’m feeling now? What’s crazy is, as much as I enjoy the hell out of this song, I, personally, cannot relate to the feeling of “partying on” at all, not even in the slightest, because I have never been chill ever. So, I’m going to have to go with Charli’s interpretation, her exact lyrics (and her TikTok confirmation of course). Once again, I love a song that tells a good story, add this one to the list!

7. Norah Jones

Song of the Month: Don’t Know Why

An absolute classic, all my girls love ‘Don’t Know Why.’ Norah Jones helped raise a generation of soul, jazz, and genre-bending music lovers and we should probably be talking about it every single day. Let’s talk about how she absolutely swept the 2003 Grammys with 5 Grammys including Best New Artist and Album of the Year!!!!!!  As a matter of fact, she is still that girl today. Face card does not decline and her stylist, Mindy Saad, is incredible in the way she captures personality in a look. Everyone listen to ‘Don’t Know Why’ on a rainy day this Spring, thank you & you’re welcome in advance. <3

6. Nelly Furtado

Song of the Month: I’m Like A Bird

‘I’m Like A Bird’ gets the first-ever Shower Karaoke Song of the Month Award. I can’t explain the joy I get out of singing this song in the shower. I also just can’t help but listen to ‘Promiscuous’ and ‘Maneater’ when I’m doing a full face of makeup, there is really something about it. I always go running back to my early 2000s pop icons.

5. Beach Fossils

Song of the Month: This Year

An indie lover’s classic! I think I have every single song off their Somersault album saved on Spotify. Naturally, I’m going to have to pick a song off that album because I just can’t seem to put it down. It’s truly a hard decision, but I’m going with ‘This Year’ because I am a sucker for some strings. I guess I’ve really been reminiscing on time coming and going this month! I love a song with some duality in its sound and message, and Beach Fossils knows just how to find the sweet spot between existential dread and hope. If that sounds like something you’d be into, definitely give Somersault a listen!

4. Kaytranada

Song of the Month: Lover/Friend (with Rochelle Jordan)

My go-to good-weather artist, back again and here to stay. Lover/Friend is a classic in this house. Rochelle Jordan’s sultry voice perfectly blends with Kaytranada’s signature sound. I say signature sound because I recently read an article (saw a TikTok) that stated that you can always tell a song has Katranada’s touch to it in the first beat, and I don’t think that could be more true. I also just found out that Kaytranada has a playlist on his Spotify page with every song he’s worked on so expect him in May’s article as well.

3. Sza

Song of the Month: Julia

Off Sza’s debut album, ‘Julia’ is one of my favorite songs of all time. Looking back on the last three months, I’m honestly shocked I haven’t written about 'Julia' yet—but I do try to keep these articles honest to my monthly listening habits, not just a shrine to my lifelong obsessions (even if they deserve one). This song is so dreamy, if I were Sza I’d perform it floating on a cloud. These lyrics float by you while a dream popish, synthy sound traps you in a running-your-fingers-through-your-hair type dance. Lights are set to orange, just landed in Edison Park, spinning around my room. Honey, I’m home.

2. Foxtide

Song of the Month: Pilot Wings

You might remember Foxtide from a few months back when I went to see them in concert. Well, in March they released the deluxe version of their newest album, Chaos, and I have been listening to it all April. I have to go with ‘Pilot Wings’ this go around because I have been loving it on my early afternoon strolls. If you’re looking to support your (not so) local rock band, I can’t recommend Foxtide enough.

1.Beyoncé

Song of the Month: II MOST WANTED

Wow you guys, it’s finally here, the month I see Cowboy Carter live! I have been dodging videos of this concert left and right every day since the tour started this week. I’m trying my best but, unfortunately, I just couldn’t help myself from watching Beyoncé on stage with her two daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi. There is really something about seeing my favorite be an exemplary mother and role model to her girls that makes me seriously emotional. I am beyond excited for this show, and I can’t believe she is going to top Renaissance, there is truly NO ONE doing it like her. Of course, I have been listening to Cowboy Carter nonstop this past month, preparing and hyping myself up for the concert. I’m going to have to go with ‘II MOST WANTED’ for April’s Beyoncé SOTM because it might just be a little hint of my Cowboy Carter outfit…

Let me know if you give any of the artists and songs a listen!

Write you soon!
