Met Gala Review
Before I get into my top few looks I have to get something off my chest, I fear I was extremely disappointed by the lot of this year’s Met Gala looks. The theme, “Tailored for You,” was specifically chosen to compliment the Costume Institute’s Spring Exhibit, “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” So, when I turned on the Vogue Met Gala carpet livestream, I expected to see all sorts of colors and patterns, paying homage to Black dandyism. However, I saw a lot more black, white, and grey than I expected. When I think of the Met Gala, I think of going absolutely all out for the theme, and with each year it feels more and more like people are just there to turn a look. Of course, looks were absolutely turned, but who is really going all out for a theme to the extent of which they were a few years ago? Despite my critiques, there were some looks that I really did enjoy, and those are what I will be sharing with you today because fashion is fashion is fashion is fashion, and I’m not here to yuck anyone’s yum. Let’s begin!
Lizzo
I’m going to start with this look because, obviously, it is black and white which I literally just said I didn't want to see. However, I am obsessed with this Christian Siriano look on Lizzo. The blonde hair paired with the long cigarette holder truly makes the look. She’s giving me Cruella Deville realness and I am so here for it.
Justice Smith
Give me all the polka dots, yes, please! Justice Smith looks stunning in this custom Valentino suit, but it is truly the finger waves, done by Jeelan Nadirah Aleem, that perfect this look for me. The tailoring is impeccable and I love the use of pattern. He perfectly encapsulated this year’s theme, exhibit and carpet in one.
Joey King
Guys I really doubted Joey King, honestly, I was the first to question why she was invited. However, she really made me eat my words with this Miu Miu look. She looked absolutely incredible and was one of the only white people at this entire event who actually understood the assignment. These colors, these patterns, and the little mirror details work so well together. You go, Joey King!
Coco Jones
Oh my gosh, I am so happy Coco Jones is getting the recognition she deserves this year. She looks absolutely stunning in this Manish Malhotra look. This color on her is wildly beautiful and the beading of it all is just perfection. She’s shown us she has the vocals, and now she’s shown us that she is absolutely a fashion icon. I cannot wait to see her on more carpets going forward.
Khaby Lame
Guys I did not know who this was when I saw him on the carpet, all I knew was that my jaw dropped at the sight of this look. I just found out he’s one of the most followed people on TikTok. So, I know that he knew he had to absolutely demolish because people hate to see an influencer on the Met steps. And what did he do? He absolutely demolished it. This outfit looks like it could’ve been in the exhibit. The vintage pocket watches and coat worn half-off add such interest to this classic suit. I must give him his 10s.
Jodie Turner-Smith
Dressed in Burberry, Jodie Turner-Smith understood the assignment. This look is inspired by a Black equestrian named Selika Lazevski from the 19th century. Yes! Please teach me some history on the Met Gala carpet, this is what I want to see. On top of the historical reference, this look is simply amazing on its own and, of course, I am obsessed with the color.
Damson Idris
I absolutely adored the campiness of him arriving in a tear-away F1 racing suit to reveal this stunning Tommy Hilfiger suit. This kind of color and pattern is exactly what I wanted to see on the carpet this year, and he wore it so well. The gorgeously blinged-out helmet, stunning jewelry pieces, and matching driving gloves tell such a unique story all while promoting his new movie.
Cardi B
I am not hearing nearly enough commotion for this look. Also dressed in Burberry, Cardi B stuns in a beautifully colorful look on this year’s carpet. Beyond just color, I love this look. I’m not sure what her inspiration was but I’m seriously getting some Prince from the ruffles and material of this suit.
Colman Domingo
Being the man he is and the fact that he was, of course, a host this year, we already knew Colman Domingo was going to serve us perfectly tailored realness. The patterns and textures of this Valentino suit elevate this look to reflect Black dandyism impeccably. He, probably more than anyone, understood this theme and continuously explained and advocated for it for the past few months, I can’t imagine anyone better to host this year’s Met Gala.
Ms. Lauryn Hill
My jaw dropped to the inner crust of Earth when I saw none other than Ms. Lauryn Hill on the Met Gala carpet. Are you joking? This is what I wanted to see! The color, the accessories, the tailoring, she looks 1. stunning 2. perfectly on theme in every way. I admire this woman so much, talk about a literal icon living.
Laura Harrier
Oh my goodness, talk about a face card that does not decline. Laura Harrier absolutely stunned in this Zac Posen with Gap design. This pose perfectly showcases the stunning silhouette of this look, she knew exactly what she was doing. The flow and drapery of the sleeves and pants look sickening paired with the tailoring of her fit and flare itty bitty waistline. No notes.
Teyana Taylor
Dressed by the iconic Ruth E. Carter, Teyana Taylor shut down the carpet in this look. The execution of this look and its beautiful adherence to the theme absolutely stunned me. She looks incredible, classy, strong, feminine, and powerful in this look, perfectly embodying Black dandyism and its impact on fashion. On top of that, last minute she decided to wear a du-rag and, in my opinion, that decision truly took this look to another level. Her jacket was embroidered with the phrase “Harlem Rose” in reference to her song “Rose In Harlem” and there is just nothing I love more than a personal detail on the Met Gala carpet. She set an unbelievable standard being the first on the carpet, and for that, she is getting my Best-Dressed award.
Well, there you have it, my favorite 2025 Met Gala looks! These looks were iconic and I am already looking forward to finding out next year’s theme. Here’s to fashion’s biggest night, one of my favorite of the year!
